The rising complexity of the environmental issue calls for even more varied models and methods for describing the relation between industrial activity and environmental threats. The theoretical sustainability concept “Industrial Ecology” aims at integrating the technical, economical and organisational elements of the environmental efforts carried out by the industry, thereby facilitating an interdisciplinary understanding of industrial environmental problems. The students will be introduced to concepts and theory within the field of industrial sustainability through three educational modules: 1) Technical and environmental aspects of industrial ecology, 2) Economical and environmentally effective aspects of industrial ecology and 3) Socio-technical and organisational aspects of industrial ecology.
The course will be based on case studies and company visits combined with lectures and group work, including speeches prepared by the students. Classes will be lead by teachers from the DTU Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Management and the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics, LU, and will likewise be located to these two institutes.
Øresund Environment Academy coordinates the course, together with Assoc. Prof. Henrik Wenzel from DTU and Assoc. Prof. Michael Backmann from LU. The intention is to gather students across the Øresund Region, but international students are also encouraged to participate and the teaching will be in English.
